It’s hailing!  Disc was canceled due to lack of numbers, but the weather’s become inclement as well.  It was only occasionally spitting rain when I was out running.  Now, it’s pouring with BB-sized hail.  It’s strangely not that cold.

Had a good run today.  I changed my route to avoid traffic problems.  I kept more upright and I think that helped my side cramp.  Did 4 miles in 35 minutes.

Mom called right when I got back.  Oma’s in surgery right now.  Mom said that her stress test was surprisingly good, but they’re still going to use a spinal tap and twilight sleep.  My mom sounded very positive, as did Oma yesterday.

Today, I’m set to finish the dishes, take a look at my short pieces.  Maybe do some market work.

But first, a shower.  And I think soup for lunch.

Book #2 — The Secret Medicine of the Pharaohs by Cornelius Stetter

First, what’s the deal with the tabloid title?  The “Secret” Medicine?  What sort of medicine the ancient Egyptians practiced may not be well known, but it’s not really secret either.  This book is sprawling.  Stetter touches upon this, that, and the other without really delving into any subject in great detail.  He offers up quite a bit about Egyptology that isn’t directly related to medicine.  I already know what a wonder the pyramids and tombs are, and therefore I didn’t need a long section on their measurements.  How those hundreds of thousand guys schlepping stone around treated their blisters would have been more interesting.  There’s a lengthy bit at the end about the Book of the Dead, which isn’t medicine either.  I’d consider mummification only peripherally related to the health of the living.  Cures are listed out in a rather mundane manner, while circumcision is given several pages, revealing a prejudice in  Stetter’s for trying to prove the Judeo-Christian Bible wrong.  One reviewer on Amazon.com claims that the book is very inaccurate on many counts.  Despite all this, I liked the book.  It’s given me a glimpse or two in to what that culture might have been like.  Very different from that conjured by my imagination.

I did a crappy three mile-ish run.  The first 2.2 miles were good, I did them in 17.7 minutes.  And then I got a stitch in my ribs to end all stitches.  It was more ventral than the usual side stitches and didn’t go away until I had walked about a quarter mile.  There was also construction and a hint of rain that kept me from my usual four mile route.  The weather is making my hands hurt.  But my back feels better than it has since last Tuesday.  Guess the run served its primary function.

Called Oma this morning to see how she was.  She seemed to be in pretty good spirits, actually.  We talked a good long while.  The stress test okayed her for bypass surgery tomorrow morning.  My brother called before I went out for my run to commiserate about being laid off from his job.  In retrospect, he wishes he hadn’t moved to a place that required a year lease.  Huh.

Competitive league may not happen for me, not due to being pushed out by lots of strong female players, but because there aren’t enough women playing.  As of Sunday night, there were four of us, and Sharon dropped after hearing that.  I have to accept the fact that I will never be able to predict the habits of the females of the species.  Need to update PHX-ations pages.  Keith again mentioned me taking over some of the VOTS html duties.  We’ll see how that works out.

Yesterday, I cleaned up the apartment a bit, except for dishes, and continued work on the wiki.  Will probably do the same today, maybe with some Rifts reading / Folly-giant-killing mixed in.  If I get kinda ahead on the wiki.  I’m not sure about working on a manuscript in wiki form, but I really shouldn’t be afraid of such changes.

New Year Fest ended with us scoring one more point.  Only played one game though.  Who knows.   If we would have played another game, we might have scored two for the day.

We ate and watched a movie while doing so, I kept thinking, I need to remember to call Oma when this is over.  It’s her birthday today.  Well, during the movie, my mom called.  She’d been trying to get hold of me since Thursday.  Oma’s in the hospital.  They found a blockage in her femoral artery.  Their going to do a stress test tomorrow to see if that can put her under and do a bypass.  If they can’t put her under, they’ll try to clear it the rotor-router method and hope for the best.  The worst would be losing her leg.

Just not fun news.  I was feeling okay, but now it’s just kind of settling in and I find I’m tired and sad.  And attempting to do things to distract myself…

had the interesting idea of redoing this meme, two years later.  I shall join her.

First, I now use iTunes.  Yeah, I caved.  But it’s awfully handy for podcast aggregation.  Two years ago, I would have said, what’s a podcast?  I still don’t own an iPod.

Really didn’t have anything good to say yesterday.  Therefore, I did not post.  We helped with field lining and then slacked off all evening, culminating with a dinner of donuts, bananas, and yogurt.  Today was New Year Fest.  My team scored one point.  Out of four games.  Ultimate frisbee is not like soccer, so one point is pretty darn bad.  But there’s a lot of newer players on it, girls playing their first tournament.  We did drills between games, so hopefully people are learning and getting comfortable with the disc.  Happily, we managed not to get down on ourselves.  One of these days, I’m going to end up on a B team that gets grumpy when they lose, but not this year.

Right now, I am very tired.  My body thinks sleep would be good, but I want to stay up a little longer.  If I go to bed now, I’ll wake up at an inopportune time, like in three hours, and not get back to sleep.  We’ve got two games tomorrow, starting earlier than today.

It’s an odd thing really.  It’s part of my argument for people getting back up in fights.  It is punishment to the body to get up tomorrow morning and play two more games.  I will hurt.  My body will scream for more rest and food.  But I’m going to play two more games tomorrow anyway.
