Trip went very well. The advantage to driving on a Friday night, leaving past 6pm, is that there’s really no traffic.
I didn’t get to my free writing or my nap yesterday. Eric got home about five minutes after I posted my entry. Kinda wish I had brought along my short pieces to work on. Laptops are nice to have around.
Free writing, that’s probably going to be more of a rant:
So, I figured I’d do my free writing. This being morning and my head being fuzzy, I figured I’d go hunting for a good writing prompt. In the end, unhappy with the ‘write what you remember most about fill-in-the-blank,’ I headed for the dictionary and figured a random word would do. On the front page of Merriam-Webster.com is something called Open Dictionary. The point is to have users add entries to the dictionary. The Open Dictionary word of the day is miniphany. A miniphany, as defined by the user who added it, is a miniature epiphany. A what? Isn’t an epiphany something that is or is not? There isn’t any scale involved with the “sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something.” Lightning has either struck your brain or it hasn’t. Not even in etymological terms does this make sense. Epi- doesn’t mean “big-assed.” The etymology of epiphany is more like “attached to perception.” Which brings me to the word of the year, which I saw reported elsewhere about a week or two ago and it annoyed me then too. Truthiness. Defined: truth that comes from the gut, not books; the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true. In other words: a hunch, a wish, falsity. Except, let’s use the word truth in it. Yeah, sometimes my fellow man worries me…
I’m going back to sleep now…
