Horror Films A to Z ~ I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

Year: 2016
Runtime: 1h 29m
Director: Oz Perkins
Writer: Oz Perkins
Stars: Ruth Wilson, Paula Prentiss, Bob Balaban

A young nurse takes care of an elderly author who lives in a haunted house.

Initial: I had actually started watching this in the past and got unnerved enough to turn it off.

Production Notes: Oz Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins, the star of the classic Psycho (1960). He includes a couple of references to his father in the movie.

What Did I Think: (possible spoilers ahead) This. is. a. very. slow. movie. It is a haunted house flim and is 95% atmosphere. With its reclusive female writer and house haunted by layers of the past, it does feel like a spiritual sequel to any given Shirley Jackson story. It ended up being not as scary as thought it was going to be, but it is unnerving with its long shots, negative space, and tense soundtrack. I can’t say I’ll ever watch this again, but didn’t not enjoy it while it was on.  It does make me curious about Oz Perkins’ other films.

I agree. Very unnerving. I liked it. I’m a fan of Ruth Wilson. I didn’t know the director was the son of Anthony Perkins. I may have to watch it again to get those references.
