Ready or Not
Runtime: 1h 35m
Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Writer: Guy Busick, R. Christopher Murphy
Stars: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien
A bride’s wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.
Initial: Ready or Not made quite a few Best of 2019 lists among the (mostly horror) movie folks I know online.
Production Notes: Samara Weaving is the niece of actor Hugo Weaving. Ready or Not, an R-rated horror comedy, was released after the Disney/Fox merger. The joke is, Grace is a Disney princess…
What Did I Think: (possible spoilers ahead) If I had to describe Read or Not in terms of other movies, I’d say that it’s a cross between Clue (1985) and Green Room (2015). Dark, but goofy comedy and a gory escape film. Two great tastes that taste great together. I am amazed that it wasn’t nominated for a Stoker award.
The exposition is very well done. We’re given characters, aside from the main character that are not fully knowledgeable about what is going on. Plus, these characters are generally incompetent *and stay that way*. Further Grace doesn’t gain or lose competence over the course of the film either. That is probably the aspect that reminds me the most of Green Room.
Little touches I enjoyed:
- Everything about Andie MacDowell.
- Movies don’t take enough advantage of using “classic” music in their scores. This film opened with some Beethoven.
- Early on, Grace gets sensible shoes. Also, she acquires several guns over the course of the movie and none of them ever work out for her.
About the ending… I was worried I knew too much about this movie going in, but I didn’t know about the ending. In my opinion, the ending works if you’ve bought in to the ridiculous nature of what’s been going on. For me, it worked.
